Bike/Walk to School Day
Karrer Middle School will participate in the first-ever National Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 9, 2012.

The National Center for Safe Routes to School (NCSRS) is sponsoring Bike to School Day as an extension of International Walk to School Day, an event that brings together communities from over 40 countries by having children practice walking safely to school. This year, Bike to School Day will encourage communities to have a bike-focused celebration.

The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) has been holding a spring walk and bike to school event since 2010 with over 20 school districts participating in the spring of 2011.   From Dublin EBE, ACE, Coffman, GMS, KMS, RE, SCE, GTE, and DRE participated in 2011.

At KMS we will give a ticket to students who ride to school on May 9th and an extra ticket if they are wearing a helmet.  A prize drawing will be held at lunch.

Here are some tips that will help you enjoy the event and have a safe ride:

  • Parent should join their children on the ride to school
  • Always wear a helmet to protect your head
  • Ride in the right-most lane that goes in the direction that you are traveling or on designated multi-use paths
  • Obey all stop signs, traffic lights and lane markings; be predictable
  • Signal turns or lane changes; look, indicate your intention, then act
  • Be visible by wearing bright clothing and use blinking rear lights
  • Always lock your bike in an approved location.

Cycling can be for fun, for fitness or for transportation.

Join us on May 9, 2012!

Attention Parents of KMS 6th Graders
  • All 6thgraders are required by Ohio law to have a TDAP booster vaccine prior to entry into 7thgrade. Whooping cough is currently prevalent in the community and the Tdap vaccine is now required to help protect against not only Pertussis (whooping cough), but also Diphtheria and Tetanus. Please contact your child's doctor to see if your 6thgrader has already received this vaccine or will need to get one during this school year. If your 6th grader has already received the Tdap vaccine, please send verification of this record into the clinic at your child's middle school before school ends. This record must be on file before the start of your child's 7thgrade year. For questions please contact your child's doctor, the county health department or the clinic staff at your child's school.
Stanford and O-L Results to be Sent Out

In the fall, students in grade 6 took the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) and the Stanford Achievement Test.  Student score reports for these assessments were sent home with students on Friday, March 9.  Please contact our school counselor if you have any questions.

New Middle School Schedule
Restructuring of Middle School Day will Focus on
Core Subjects, Save Dollars!

The Board of Education received a presentation on the restructuring of school days at the middle school level for 2012-13 in order to improve efficiency and provide greater focus on core subjects in preparation for forthcoming National Common Core Standards requirements in Language Arts and Math.

These sets of standards define the knowledge and skills students should have to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing, academic college courses and in workforce training programs. The standards are based on the best national and international standards, giving our students a competitive advantage in the global economy.

The changes include every day double blocked periods of language arts and math for sixth and seventh grade students, science and social studies blocked periods every other day, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) opportunities for 8th graders.

“The restructuring of the middle school day was recommended by our four middle school principals,” said Superintendent Dr. David Axner. “There is considerable rigor involved in the common core. These blocked periods of time dedicated to core subjects will give our students and staff the best opportunities to meet these new standards.”

The changes to the middle school day also include a more prescribed set of electives. Sixth grade students will have the opportunity to take physical education and reading, seventh graders will take health and art, and 8th graders will have greatest choice of electives with music opportunities and the new STEM course.

As a result of the blocked periods of time for core subjects and the focus on common core subjects, the district will save significant dollars in staffing costs.
Taking the Pledge!
All Karrer Middle School students recently took the pledge to "Stop a Bully".
The Pledge is:
"I pledge to stand up and speak out against bullying.
I recognize the inner worth and value of everyone.
I show others kindness, respect and eliminate hurtful behavior.
I recognize my ability to create change."
At lunch, Mr. Weininger presented a brief program telling students about bullying and how it effects students.  Two supportive videos were shown and all the students then took the pledge and signed the handy wallet version to keep with them.  On the back are tips to handle bullying situations.
Don't forget that on the tab to the left is the district site to report bullying.
Student Morning Drop Off
The school day runs from 8:43 a.m. to 3:23 p.m. this year.
Students may enter the building at 8:23 a.m. and should report to the commons.
Students arriving earlier than 8:23 a.m. should also report to the commons.
Don't forget during drop-off and pick up, cars should enter by the SOUTH ENTRANCE.  This procedure was implemented last year and very effectively address the issue of vehicles lined up on the street.
